Rape & Sexual Abuse

“My mother’s boyfriend’s been raping me since I was 2. I ran away but am scared that he’ll do it again.” – 14-year-old

VICTIMS NEED:

  • To see a doctor right away.
  • To have people to talk with about feelings…people who are willing to listen for as long as it takes.

Don’t be afraid to call for help no matter who assaulted you – even if it is a family member. The numbers listed below can connect you to someone who’ll listen. Rape is a violent assault on your body, mind and spirit.

Sexual Abuse (See also Child Abuse) is the same thing, but often continues over long periods of time, with the abuser convincing the victim to keep the secret. If you are being touched by a family member, date, teacher, adult friend, or someone else, and it makes you uncomfortable, unhappy, confused or depressed… If you are having sex with someone and you don’t want to continue, but are afraid of what will happen if you say no or tell anyone, you may be the victim of sexual abuse. Victims of sexual abuse need exactly what rape victims need, listed above.

IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. You did not cause this to happen. You DON’T have to keep this secret anymore. If this is happening now or has happened in the past, talking to someone you trust will help you more than you can guess.

Even though you may have mixed feelings about the other person involved, even though you may be afraid to tell anyone about this, try to find someone you trust to talk to. Talking can help you sort out your feelings; it will help you feel less alone; and it will help you find ways to begin to heal the hurt.
