A Message from Ron Silverman

With a heartfelt thank you, I welcome you to The First Annual Matthew Silverman Memorial Golf Classic.

As many may know, in January of 2006, in the midst of teenage depression, my son Matthew tragically took his own life. At the time, Matt was a senior in high school, captain of the track team, an excellent student, a budding entrepreneur, a musician, and an exceptionally talented computer programmer. He was uniformly loved and admired by his family and friends. Matt was kind, genuine, sincere, generous, and a trusted and fiercely loyal friend. He also had a beautiful smile and a terrific wry sense of humor.

Since Matt’s passing, I have dedicated myself to combating the unspeakable tragedy of teenage suicide. It is a worldwide problem. The statistics are shocking regarding those who succeed in taking their lives, and even more alarming concerning those who contemplate it. Indeed, it is the third leading cause of death for those 15-24 behind accidents and homicide. This problem exists in every ethnic group, and in every socio economic class.
No segment of society, and, unfortunately, no family is exempt from this potential horror. Education, and eliminating the continuing shame, which accompanies the tragedy, is critical.

Many outreach, hotline and emergency response organizations provide essential services. TEEN LINE, a charitable organization affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, is a peer-to-peer hotline established some 30 years ago. It is an exceptional organization, which has offered invaluable help to teenagers in distress. In addition to financial support, I have spoken on TEEN LINE’S behalf to groups throughout Southern California including law enforcement agencies, social workers, therapists as well as TEEN LINE trainees.

To honor Matthew’s memory, to reward excellent community service, and to expand its outreach, the proceeds of this first golf tournament will be donated to TEEN LINE

I’m confident the tournament will be good fun, great golf, delicious food and drink, with terrific prizes. It is with the deepest of gratitude that I thank you for helping make it a success.
