TEEN QUESTION/PROBLEM:
I've been bulimic for about 8 months, and lately i've begun to starve myself, as if throwing up my food wasn't enough.
But that's not the problem.
The problem is i've been having horrible chest pains for the last three days, and i tell my parents, but they think it's nothing bad at all, but i have a fear that it has to do with not eating or the bulimia in general. Telling my parents seems out of the question, all though i know it's the right thing to do. But, how do you tell the people that think you're perfect that you have an eating disorder?
TEEN LINE WROTE:
Thanks for contacting Teen Line. It sounds like your going through a very difficult situation. Many girls go through eating disorders but it's important to know the dangers in having a disorder. As you can tell it definitely creates long term body damage; it could possibly lead to death.
Have you considered talking to a counselor our trusted adult about your eating habits? It's a good idea to talk about it even if you feel like you can't. A family member or a trusted friend is a good way to get your thoughts out.
Even if it is just one friend it can be a great support system to get you to stop. 8 months is a pretty long while to be straining your body the way you are and getting help is the best way to go.
A number you can call is Eating Disorder Awareness & Prevention (EDAP) 1-800-931-2237, or you can go to their website at www.edap.org. If you need anything else feel free to call us here at 1-310-855-HOPE, we are open from 6pm to 10pm PST.
