Youth Yellow Pages: Suicide
|
For immediate emergencies only, dial 911.
“Since my father died, I have been so depressed, and sometimes
I think it would just hurt less to kill myself.” - 13 year old
If someone talks to you about suicide, take it seriously. A
friend may tell you he or she is thinking of killing him or
herself and ask you to keep it secret. THIS IS A SECRET
YOU CANNOT KEEP! To be a good friend, encourage the
person talking about suicide to talk to an adult he or she
trusts or suggest they call TEEN LINE to talk in
confidence to a teen.
If you think someone may be suicidal, don’t be afraid to ask.
Mentioning suicide will not give the person the idea or push
them over the edge. Talking about it can prevent it from
happening. The crisis period usually lasts only a short time.
WITH PROFESSIONAL HELP, A SUICIDAL PERSON
CAN GET BETTER.
Some Warning Signs:
- Talking about committing suicide
- Preoccupation with death
- Having a specific plan for committing suicide
- Dramatic changes in behavior
- Giving away prized possessions
- Recent loss of a loved one
