getting in shape

Postby struckteen86 » Mon Sep 19, 2011 11:53 am

I am in ROTC, going to be in the army, one problem...my fitness. I struggle with cardio, and i have an injury now that prevents running. I am supposed to have high confidence, but I don't, I feel like a whale compared to the others. How can I improve my cardio if I can't run? this is a setback, just like if i try to do pushups. I can't afford to go to the gym. I feel lie I'm going to be a whale for life. I've been depressed for a long time because of it, and i don't over-eat, i eat healthy though, just can't be motivated to exercise. help.....?

Thanks for reaching out to the TEENLINE message boards. It seems like you are really passionate about goinfg to the army and it must be really difficult wanting to be able to do cardio and having an injury hold you back. But you are not alone. Have you tried swimming or biking? Working out with a friend can also make it a lot easier and give you more motivation if you dont want to go. If you ever feel the need to talk please feel free to call a TEENLINE listener at (310) 855 4673 PST 6- 10 pm.

What a great decision that you made to join the Army! You definitely have bravery within you to make that choice. With that bravery, I think you have it in you to keep going even when you feel like giving up. Because, no lie, cardio training is hard work! And there are so many times in exercising when you feel like throwing in the towel, but in the end, exercise is well worth improved health, longevity and better energy levels when you get older. I'd suggest you see a doctor and ask what you should do to get in better shape, what your goal amount and intensity level of exercise is and how soon you can get to training with an injury or if there's anything you can do to heal it faster. Keep in mind too that you won't see results immediately and that exercise should involve a balance of high intensity to build speed and strength and low intensity to build endurance. Also, remember that flexibility will help prevent injury in the future, so stretching will be highly beneficial. You can do it! :D
